The number of individuals from Indiana in the Trump administration has increased: Jerome M. Adams, MD, the former Indiana health commissioner was confirmed by the Senate as the new surgeon general. Adams replaces Vivek Murthy, MD, who was a holdover from the Obama administration and was removed from the position in April.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee voted to approve Adams for a full Senate vote on Wednesday, and the full Senate voted just a day later. Adams had impressed members of both parties during his confirmation hearing.

The Senate also confirmed 4 other picks for HHS: Elinore McCance-Katz, MD, PhD, as the assistant secretary for mental health and substance use; Brett Giroir, MD, as assistant secretary for health; Robert Kadlec, MD, as assistant secretary for preparedness and response; and Lance Robertson as assistant secretary for aging.

Adams is an anesthesiologist and an expert in the field of substance abuse. In the past, he has been an advocate for addressing the opioid epidemic.
