AHA Hails Signing of Law to Fight Drug Shortages
The nation's hospitals hailed President Barack Obama's signing of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act on Monday as the right step to address the nation's drug-shortage problem.
“With nearly 100% of hospitals reporting shortages, access to life-saving drugs is essential,” Richard Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, said in a statement. “The law will help hospitals obtain that critical access.”

It will do that, Umbdenstock continued, by improving communications between pharmaceutical manufacturers and the public; by giving the FDA authority to quicken approvals; and by permitting providers to take the necessary action to conserve their drug inventories.
