Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by non-scarring hair loss, primarily due to the immune system's attack on hair follicles. The pathophysiology involves a breakdown in immune privilege of hair follicles, leading to an inflammatory response. Cytotoxic T cells, particularly CD8+ T cells, infiltrate the hair follicle, causing hair loss. Inflammation plays a crucial role, with cytokines such as IFN-γ and TNF-α contributing to the immune-mediated destruction of hair follicles.
