Schizophrenia is a very large public health problem, but patients with the illness are a difficult population to treat and restrictive prior authorization policies have reduced adherence, explained Dana Goldman, , the Leonard D. Schaeffer Chair and Director of the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California.

He added that restrictive prior authorization policies have increased hospitalizations among these patients and even added more patients to the prison population.

"The social cost can be quite large as a result of restrictive policies," he said.
