Worcester Polytechnic Institute Nabs $1.2M Grant for Diabetes App

Article

Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts recently received a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a smartphone application aimed at helping people manage diabetes, the Worcester Business Journal reports.

For the 4-year project, researchers from WPI's Healthcare Delivery Institute will collaborate with diabetes and wound care experts from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The smartphone app will connect wirelessly to a glucose meter and scale so users could track their blood sugar levels and weight. In addition, the app will use the smartphone's camera to capture and analyze images of foot ulcers, a potentially dangerous complication associated with advanced, uncontrolled diabetes.
