Steven D. Shapiro, MD, executive vice president, chief medical and science officer, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), says that when improving care, sometimes less is more.
“Certainly, there are cases where you pay for what you get,” he says. “The future is figuring out which is which, and when ‘less is more,’ and what essential services do we still need to provide, and how do we do it in the best possible manner?”
At UPMC, Dr Shapiro says their models do “a little bit of everything.”
“When you put it together, it’s quite unique. I think our big advantage is that we’ve always been willing to change, and we know that change is necessary in the future,” he says.
