Dr Anders Kolb on Leading Blood Cancer United Into a New Era

Commentary
Podcast

Blood Cancer United, formerly Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, aims to enhance awareness and support for blood cancer patients during Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

More than 75 years ago, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was founded in an office on Wall Street, by a couple whose son had died from a disease then described as “100% fatal.”

Today, the LLS serves more than 1.2 million people with more than 100 types of blood cancer, many of which are curable or can be treated to the point that they are chronic conditions. But blood cancers remain deadly, and they lack screenings that have saved prevented deaths in some common solid tumor cancers.

On August 28, LLS took one of the biggest steps in its history: its name changed to Blood Cancer United, reflecting the breadth of the population it serves and its mission to work as one to secure funding for research, education, and support for patients and caregivers. The change came in time for Blood Cancer Awareness Month in September.

To learn more, executive editor of The American Journal of Managed Care®, Mary Caffrey, spoke with Anders Kolb, MD, who joined LLS as president and CEO in May 2023 and will bring the organization’s new name to patients and the public. Kolb had a long career in pediatric leukemia treatment and research before joining LLS, and he shared that Blood Cancer United now has a new goal: to help patients with blood cancer gain more than a million years of life.
