Current PDTs in Mental Health Disorders

Opinion
Video

Panelists discuss how prescription digital therapeutics like Daylight show promise for treating depression and anxiety but face significant accessibility barriers due to lack of payer coverage and high out-of-pocket costs.

Patients seeking mental health treatment increasingly benefit from prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs), though access remains a significant challenge. Currently, patients with major depressive disorder can access Rejoyn, an FDA-approved digital therapeutic that provides cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. However, patients face barriers including cost (approximately $200 for a 10-week program) and limited insurance coverage, forcing many to seek unregulated alternatives in app stores.

The accessibility issues particularly impact patients who could benefit most from 24/7 availability of therapeutic interventions. Patients appreciate having immediate access to coping strategies and therapeutic techniques when traditional therapy appointments are unavailable. This real-time accessibility is especially valuable for patients experiencing anxiety or depression symptoms outside of normal business hours, providing them with evidence-based interventions when they need them most.

Unfortunately, insurance coverage limitations leave many patients unable to access FDA-approved digital therapeutics, instead relying on unvalidated apps that lack clinical evidence for safety and efficacy. This situation frustrates both patients and providers, as rigorous clinical trials have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of approved PDTs. Patients deserve access to evidence-based digital interventions that have undergone the same regulatory scrutiny as traditional pharmaceuticals, rather than being forced to use untested alternatives.
