Steven Nathan, MD, discusses the abstract “Predicting Long-Term Survival in Patients With Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: Data From the IPF-PRO Registry,” which aimed to identify key predictors of long-term survival in IPF using data from the IPF-PRO Registry; the study employed a classification and regression tree model to analyze variables such as FVC percent predicted, oxygen use, BMI, and age, and found that factors such as oxygen use and FVC levels were strong predictors of survival beyond 5 years.

The largest unmet needs in the treatment and management of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) include the development of more effective therapies that can halt or reverse disease progression, as current treatments primarily focus on symptom management and slowing disease progression. Additionally, there is a need for improved diagnostic tools to enable earlier detection and intervention, as well as personalized treatment approaches that consider individual patient variability. Enhanced understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is also crucial to inform the development of novel therapeutic targets.
