Better Medical Homes Come at a Higher Cost
Running a better patient-centered medical home (PCMH) healthcare center may be more costly, researchers found.
Centers with a quality score that was 10 points higher than a mean score had a $2.26 higher operating cost per patient per month, Robert Nocon, MHS, of the University of Chicago, and colleagues reported online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
That translates to an annual cost of $508,207 for the average PCMH, though that cost "is relatively small compared with the potential cost savings from averted hospitalization and emergency department use observed in some preliminary studies," they wrote.
