director of the Penn Center for Cancer Care Innovation. Their conversation encapsulates much of what has been discussed in the oncology space in the past year, from the unique perspective of academic medicine: the importance of collaboration between academic medical centers and community oncology practices and testing innovative cancer care delivery in academic and community settings to have the greatest impact on patients.

“If we can only show that a certain innovation works at Penn Medicine or an academic practice, it's very limited—it's useful, but it's very limited,” Bekelman says. “If we want to demonstrate as part of our mandate to generalize knowledge across the country, we have to be able to extend programs into the community, learn from the community, test things that are working in the community in academic environments, create a bidirectional approach that allows for expertise from both systems to create the best possible opportunities for patients with cancer.”

He also discusses the importance of community clinical trial accrual and of keeping oncological services within the community and not handing them over to large hospital systems, thereby driving up the cost of care. 

“OneOncology was created by physicians for physicians to maintain the autonomy and allow physicians the choice of seeing patients in the community vs in a hospital or academic medical center,” he emphasizes. “I think every patient, every family deserves choice. In many cases, and in most cases, we feel like the community option is the best.”

Genetic differences increasing the risk of early-stage aggressive 

 in Latin American women with obesity underscored research disparities, according to a poster presented at the 2025 

 presented by William Audeh, MD, MS, chief medical officer at Agendia and board-certified internal medicine oncology specialist, highlighted findings from the MammaPrint, BluePrint, and Full-genome Data Linked With Clinical Data to Evaluate New Gene EXpression Profiles (FLEX; 

) clinical trial. The trial included 15,577 patients whose entire transcriptome data revealed a higher prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes among the 

 in the study compared with Black and non-Hispanic White women.

The genomic tools used in the study included MammaPrint, a standard-of-care 70-gene assay, whereas BluePrint is an 80-gene assay used to guide anthracycline chemotherapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative early breast cancer. When used together, they provide insights that can optimize treatment decisions for patients.

“[These tools help us to see] what is driving the growth of that breast cancer, and that can help select therapies, and if you're going to use chemotherapy, which chemotherapy drug may have the better effect,” Audeh said in an interview with
