Surgical Treatment Bundle Reduced Post-Surgical Complications: JAMA Study
Implementing a pre-operative infection prevention "bundle" was associated with a significant reduction in serious S aureus surgical site infections.
A study published in JAMA evaluated whether the implementation of an evidence-based bundle would reduce the risk of S aureus infection at the surgical site in patients undergoing cardiac operations or hip or knee arthroplasties. The study, conducted in 20 hospitals across 9 states, asked patients identified with methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) or methicillin-susceptible S aureus (MSSA), to follow a prophylactic regimen before surgery. Overall, the pre-operative intervention reduced the rate of surgical siteS aureus infections for hip or knee arthroplasties and for cardiac operations.
