Richard Snyder, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Independence Blue Cross, says patient adherence programs can result in reduced emergency room visits and fewer hospitalizations. Independence Blue Cross utilizes their own care managers in encouraging payers to adopt practices that lead to medication adherence.
Dr Snyder suggests there are demonstrated improvements in promoting adherence: “Instead of 67% of adherence to medications measured by medication possession ratios, we’re seeing 71% in the higher rates in those patients.”
