National Speakers to Attend AJMC Diabetes Meeting

PLAINSBORO, N.J. — A lineup of national speakers will come to the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal in April for “Patient-Centered Diabetes Care: Putting Theory in Pratice,” which will bring together stakeholders in delivering high-quality care to those with diabetes under the requirements of healthcare reform.

The meeting will be April 10-11, 2014, at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal. An evening reception with a speaker will be followed by a daylong conference. For information and registration, see www.ajmc.com. Members of the press who wish to attend should contact Mary Caffrey at mcaffrey@ajmc.com or call (609) 716-7777 x 144 (email preferred).

The American Journal of Managed Care, now in its 20th year of publication, is presenting Patient-Centered Diabetes Care as part of its effort to bring together providers, payers, policymakers, leaders of formularies from the nation’s insurance companies, and researchers from the pharmaceutical industry as the Affordable Care Act is implemented across the nation. In diabetes care, all have a hand in curbing this epidemic, which affects an estimated 26 million people in the United States, or an estimated 8 percent of the population.

The conference will examine how new knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is being handled by different stakeholders, and what each can learn from the others. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert A. Gabbay, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President at Joslin Diabetes Center, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gabbay has been a leader in finding the best ways to engage patients in their own care, through models such as the patient-centered medical home.

Other speakers include:

Dr. Josh Benner, RxAnte. Dr. Benner is president of RxAnte, a provider of science-based information technology solutions for improving quality and lowering the cost of health care. He is a leading voice on medication adherence and a former fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Dr. Geoffrey Joyce, University of Southern California. Dr. Joyce concentrates on the costs of medical care and the role of insurance. His sponsors include leading public sector and quality care entities as well as industry. Dr. Joyce a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Rebecca Killion, McKenna Long & Aldridge. Ms. Killion is highly regarded for her work as a patient representative before the US Food and Drug Administration, and has type 1 diabetes herself.

Dr. Deneen Vojta, United Health Center for Health Reform and Modernization. Dr. Vojta has been a leader in initiatives that focus on prevention, and led the design and study of a scalable childhood obesity intervention. She partnered with entrepreneurs to disseminate technology delivering health care in the home.

Areas for discussion on April 11 include:

  • What can be done to overcome socioeconomic disparities in diabetes care?
  • How is diabetes management changing in the face of new practice and payment models such as ACOs and medical homes?
  • How do practitioners effectively individualize care for patients with diabetes within population-based disease management programs?
  • How are employers taking on diabetes and obesity in the workplace?
  • Who are the new members of the diabetes “care team,” and how do they work together?
