More Than 100k Primary Care Providers Adopting EHRs
Nationwide, more than one-third of total primary care physicians (PCPs) are working with their regional extension centers (REC) to adopt electronic health records (EHRs), according to the U.S. Department of Health & Senior Services.
Half of these providers are in small group practices or consortia of small group practices. The other half is made up of community health centers (18%), public hospitals (11%); the remaining 21% are in various underserved settings.
The nation's 62 RECs assist PCPs in meeting meaningful use through the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. So far they have helped more than half of the targeted 1,776 critical access and rural hospitals, according to HHS.
