The pay-for-performance model has come a long way in terms of how physicians are taking care of larger patients populations, according to Mitzi Wasik, PharmD, BCPS, director of Pharmacy Medicare Programs at Aetna, Inc.

She explained that the model used to hand a group of patients off to a physician to be managed when there might be some individuals in that group who may not necessarily need to be managed. Pay-for-performance has evolved in a way that focuses on the physician and patient-centered data.

“We’re getting smarter with each turn on how we handle data with physicians and I think that’s one of the biggest advancements,” Dr Wasik said.
