Karen Lewis, MS, MM, CGC, says the goals of Healthy People 2020 are developed by looking at a variety of key areas in healthcare, and then choosing the most actionable items to improve the overall health of the general population.

Karen Lewis, MS, MM, CGC, says the goals of Healthy People 2020 are developed by looking at a variety of key areas in healthcare, and then choosing the most actionable items to improve the overall health of the general population. Ms Lewis suggests that genomics is 1 area of medicine that is quickly growing.

“There is some evidence out there now to support the 2 actionable items regarding breast and ovarian cancers as well as colorectal cancer syndromes,” she says.

She adds that there are several drivers of genetic testing which include the development of new technology, public awareness of that new technology, and the development of pharmaceuticals that target specific genetic changes.
