Reed’s research includes work in health information technology and health care delivery; and their effects on clinical outcomes and consumer decision-making on insurance
CRANBURY, N.J.— Mary Reed, DrPH, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, will serve as the special guest editor of the annual health information technology (IT) issue of The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®), which will appear in January 2019.
Dr. Reed’s research examines health IT effects on the consumer experience and effective clinical decision support, particularly impacts on clinical care, quality, and outcomes. Her work also covers topics in chronic disease management and emergency medicine, including the effects of out-of-pocket costs. The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research conducts, publishes and disseminates epidemiologic and health services research to improve the health and medical care of Kaiser Permanente members and society at large.
Dr. Reed has published widely on health IT in high-impact journals that cover medicine and science, health care policy, and health care delivery models, including AJMC®, Health Affairs, Medical Care, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and JAMA. Recent articles include mobile access to personal health records in diabetes, and family care partner use of patient portals.
Her research has received awards from within Kaiser Permanente and from AcademyHealth. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), AHRQ, the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases, and other agencies have supported Reed’s health IT-related research.
Dr. Reed received her doctorate in public health from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
“Technology use in health care keeps growing quickly. I’m looking forward to working with leading researchers to highlight evidence from the growing range of health IT tools in use — including impacts on the patient experience, on the delivery of health care, and on health outcomes,” Dr. Reed said.
