Fiscal Cliff: Medicare Eligibility Age Off Table for White House, Dick Durbin Says

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin told reporters Thursday that the White House is no longer considering raising the Medicare eligibility age as part of fiscal cliff talks.

“My understanding is that is no longer one of the things being considered by the White House, so I hope they’ll take the time to look at this carefully,” Durbin said. He added, “I was told that it’s not on the table from the White House. Now, that remains to be seen.” Democrats and liberal groups have put heavy pressure on the White House in recent days not to support an increase in the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67, arguing that it would just force the 65- and 66-year-olds to pay higher costs for their health care.
