FCS Case Study Shows High-Quality, Cost-Effective Care Delivered Through the Oncology Care Model

Article

The shift to a value-based care platform through the Oncology Care Model was shown to stimulate a cost-effective, value-based platform for care delivery for FCS patients.

The shift to a value-based care platform fundamentally altered the drivers of patient satisfaction and resulting quality of life for patients at the Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), but it also stimulated a cost-effective, value-based platform for care delivery across a growing subset of the population, according to findings of a case study.

In 2016, FCS, a community oncology practice serving nearly 100 locations in Florida, entered into the Oncology Care Model (OCM), which recently completed reporting for 9 of its initial payment periods. Key findings of the case study evaluating OCM and non-OCM practices included:

  • reduction of expenditures amounting to $168 million, more than $120 million in net CMS savings
  • FCS hospital admissions were 8% lower than those of other OCM-enrolled practices
  • FCS had 21% fewer cases of emergency room visits
