A new value-based payment approach for independent primary care practices is launching in Massachusetts, with the aim of keeping patients healthier while also reducing costs. In addition, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts program will provide a steady revenue stream for practices to care for patients even if office visits drop, as has been the case during the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides involving a patient-based payment model, there are incentives for efficiency and quality performance and immediate support payments for practices that join.
