When assessing what population is at an increased risk for developing a cardiometabolic event, Kenneth L. Schaecher, MD, FACP, CPC, explains that the patient who is disengaged is at the greatest risk. Dr Schaecher states that patients who do not make lifestyle changes and patients who are not adherent to their medicines are examples of disengaged patients.
Furthermore, the panelists discuss the cardiometabolic conditions that result in the greatest costs to managed care facilities. Dr Schaecher explains that diabetes is number 1.
Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FACE, FNLA, explains that while commonly overlooked, kidney disease is also a component of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Dr Handelsman believes that the outcomes of kidney disease pass beyond diabetes, but the condition is commonly overlooked because less patients present with kidney disease than diabetes.
Dr Schaecher concludes that patients need to have a better understanding of how kidney disease links to cardiometabolic events.
