Dr Lewis G. Sandy Discusses Barriers to Learning Health Systems

Many things that need to be refined in order to build successful learning health systems, including an infrastructure that supports learning and research and a better exchange of data and computer information.

The collection and application of real-world data is critically important to the essence of a learning health system, says Lewis G. Sandy, MD, FACP, senior vice president of clinical advancement at UnitedHealth Group.

Dr Sandy believes that there are many things that need to be refined in order to build successful learning health systems, including an infrastructure that supports learning and research and a better exchange of data and computer information.

“Fortunately, there are good and promising efforts to promote interoperability that we think can make a big difference,” Dr Sandy says.
