The goals of the new CMS Oncology Care Model align very nicely with what payers want, according to Ira M. Klein, MD, MBA, FACP, national medical director, clinical thought leadership, office of the chief medical officer, Aetna.

This new model is crucial for payment reform at the CMS level, he said, because it aligns providers to be better prepared for value-based contracting.

“The private payers have recognized for a long time that the best mechanism to align the people on the delivery side is to give them some control and incentive over goals that both meet patient quality standards and also meet some value standards in the form of cost containment or at least cost transparency,” Dr Klein said.
