Dr Andrew Sussman Discusses Healthcare's Move to Consumerism

Health reform has brought a number of large changes to how healthcare is delivered, and one of the biggest is the shift to consumerism, according to Andrew Sussman, MD, president of MinuteClinic and senior vice president and associate chief medical officer of CVS Caremark.

Health reform has brought a number of large changes to how healthcare is delivered, but there is extra focus on some areas more than others, Andrew Sussman, MD, president of MinuteClinic and senior vice president and associate chief medical officer of CVS Caremark, said at the US News Hospital of Tomorrow conference in Washington, DC.

In addition to more focus on value-based care, preventive services, and early detection, he expects a larger emphasis to be placed on consumerism in healthcare.

“Really for the first time, individuals are selecting the type of coverage that they obtain either through public exchanges or even private exchanges, and of course when individuals become more involved they focus on some consumerism type behaviors around convenience and value,” Dr Sussman said.
