Patients with diabetes whose traditions and culture includes celebrations with food should not take a negative approach to lifestyle management and dietary restrictions, according to Andrew Pumerantz, DO, FACP, of the Western Diabetes Institute.

He explained that lifestyle management will not effectively work if the patient is constantly worrying that, for instance, one extra serving of food had a detrimental impact on his or her dietary goals

“People have to feel, 'I’m doing this because my goal is being achieved in some form or fashion,'” Dr Pumerantz said. “And it may be that they don’t feel any different with lifestyle management and that they don’t feel sick in the first place but they're able to objectively understand that their modification over a period of time led to objective improvements.”
