Does Providing Women With Cesarean Delivery Rate Comparison Data Influence Hospital Choice?

Podcast

A study in this month's issue sought to determine whether directly giving women access to cesarean delivery rates of local hospitals affected their choice of hospital.

Rates of cesarean delivery throughout the country vary greatly. As many as 45% of these deliveries are unindicated, and more than three-fourths of women prefer not to have an unindicated cesarean delivery. While there are publicly available data on hospital-level cesarean delivery rates, many women don't know where to access the data. A study in this month's issue sought to determine whether directly giving women access to cesarean delivery rates of local hospitals affected their choice of hospital.

In this podcast, we speak with Rebecca A. Gourevitch, MS, Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School, and lead author on the study.
