Compounding Bill Clears Congress

Supporters of a soon-to-be law that creates an optional new class of FDA-certified compounding pharmacies are cautiously optimistic newly passed legislation will prevent future public health crisis.
On Monday, the Senate passed by voice vote the Drug Quality and Security Act, which lawmakers hope will improve the safety of compounded and prescription drugs. The bill was already passed by the House in September in a similar manner and awaits President Obama's signature.
The legislation creates an optional FDA-certification for "outsourcing facilities" large-scale compounders that ship products to multiple states, and clear standards similar to those traditional drug manufacturers must meet. The hope is purchasers will steer toward compounders that take part in this voluntary program and away from facilities that lack the FDA's seal of approval.
