A review published in a recent supplement to The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®) was summarized in a Managed Healthcare Executive article about “Four Growing Diabetes Trends.” The trends highlighted in the study, “Economic Impact of and Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes,” were patient-centered care, targeted medications, collaborative care models, and shared decision-making. “Patients need a broad spectrum of support from clinicians and healthcare systems,” co-author Jan D. Hirsch, BSPharm, PhD, told Managed Healthcare Executive.
The Accountable Care SmartBrief daily e-newsletter included a study from the August issue of AJMC® in its roundup of noteworthy accountable care research. The analysis, “Geographic Variation in Medicare and the Military Healthcare System,” found that location-based variations in spending and utilization are correlated in both healthcare systems. “The findings suggest that local healthcare provider culture affects utilization and spending in both programs,” the newsletter concluded.
A Newsday article discussed the growing phenomenon of concierge medicine on Long Island, New York, and highlighted the example of MDVIP Inc, a network of over 800 concierge physicians (18 of whom are located on Long Island). The article cited AJMC® research that observed lower rates of hospitalization among patients at MDVIP practices compared with traditional practices. The 2012 study, “Personalized Preventive Care Leads to Significant Reductions in Hospital Utilization,” also found that this reduced utilization was linked to cost savings of $2551 per patient.
