An article on PatientEngagementHIT.com discussed the results of a study published in the March issue of The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®) titled “Patient Experience Midway Through a Large Primary Care Practice Transformation Initiative.” That study analyzed the effects of the Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) initiative on the experience of Medicare beneficiaries and found equivalent or improved experiences among the study group. “These results show that the CPC model is not a detriment to primary care and is a promising solution to drive value-based care,” the PatientEngagementHIT.com article stated.
Another PatientEngagementHIT.com story summarized a case study from the recent AJMC® supplement issue, “Beyond Charitable Assistance: Sustainable Strategies for Providing Access to Critical Medications.” The case study, “Reducing Barriers to Medication Access and Adherence for ACA and Medicaid Participants: A Peer-to-Peer, Community-Based Approach,” presented encouraging results from the implementation of a peer support education model. Patients in the Mended Hearts program became “more empowered and educated, and as a result, are able to make better healthcare choices and access resources,” the researchers found.
A Seeking Alpha article assessing the stock prospects of Collegium Pharmaceuticals, which focuses on developing abuse-deterrent drugs, cited an AJMC® study to demonstrate the necessity of such products to curtail opioid abuse. The 2013 study, “Prescription Opioid Abuse: Challenges and Opportunities for Payers,” discussed the growing societal and medical costs of prescription opioid addiction. “Overall, the medical and prescription costs associated with opioid addiction and diversion have been estimated at $72.5 billion annually for private and public healthcare payers,” it stated.
