In an editorial for Modern Healthcare, Merrill Goozner discussed how the GOP’s replacement of Obamacare could prove “disastrous.” He cited an American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®) study to show the impact high-deductible health plans could have on public health. The 2013 study, “Medication Utilization and Adherence in a Health Savings Account-Eligible Plan,” found lower rates of treatment adherence among enrollees with hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression, and diabetes in these plans, which often have high deductibles.
Real Money, part of the financial news site TheStreet, featured an article about trends in MannKind (MNKD) stock after Sanofi dropped its inhaled insulin drug Afrezza, advising readers to see an article by Mary Caffrey in Evidence-Based Diabetes Management™ for more information. “The upside of Caffrey’s excellent piece is the downside for MNKD stock,” author Jim Collins wrote. “A dedicated group of diabetics love Afrezza, but are having to fight with their endocrinologists and/or insurance companies to get prescriptions for it.”
Garey Noritz, MD, discussed his research on improving care for a population of children with complex medical needs through care coordination in an interview with RevCycleIntelligence.com. The article states the Noritz’s research did not focus on the direct impact of care coordinators on healthcare costs and quality, instead referencing an AJMC® study, “The Ingredients of Success in a Medicare Accountable Care Organization.” The authors of that research found that nurse care coordinators in 1 accountable care organization helped to identify and minimize wasteful spending.”
