2010 Security Breach Cost Anthem $1.7 Million
Anthem has a history of big security breaches. In 2010 an attack that disclosed information of more than 600,000 people cost the company $1.7 million in fines from HHS.
Anthem has a history of big security breaches. This week, the company revealed that a cyberattack has put potentially 80 million current and former customers' personal information at risk, although medical information, such as claims and diagnostic codes, were not compromised. A similar security breach from a few years ago has cost Anthem $1.7 million.
In 2010, an attack on Anthem, then known as WellPoint, resulted in the disclosure of personal information of approximately 612,000 individuals. HHS fined the company $1.7 million under HIPPA and determined that WellPoint had not implemented policies and procedures to protect electronic health information covered by HIPAA. The names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, telephone numbers and health information of WellPoint customers were disclosed as a result, HHS said.
